Danyelle Campbell on Horse Polo Wraps

Hi, I am Danyelle Campbell, and I want to talk to you today about horse polo wraps, the proper application, why you use them, and when to use them.

To start out I use polo wraps  typically on the front legs, but I generally don’t use any form of boot protection or leg protection on their hind legs, but when I do it is polo wraps.  I do not use boots on the hind legs, but depending on the horse I may use them on the front legs. I don’t have a definitive reason why I would use boots versus polo wraps on the front legs, other than polo wraps are inexpensive, come in a variety of colors, and they work great when applied properly.  However, 90% of the time they’re not applied properly, so I’m hoping to give you some tips on how to apply them correctly if you choose to use them. I like Classic Equine polo wraps, I I like the size of them, the length, and I like that they’ve got a little bit of flex making it easy to put on the horse’s leg the proper way.

So, let’s start with going down to the front leg. When applying the polo wrap you always want to start from the front of the leg and go towards the back, so when wrapping the opposite leg it would go the other way. If you’re pulling your wrap forward that is incorrect.  It’s very important for your horses well-being because of the structure of their legs.

I always roll my wraps to the outside versus some people will apply them the opposite, that’s a personal preference, but how you roll your wrap when you are going to put it on their leg is the big difference that’s important to remember.

So, now start a little below the knee and apply even pressure the whole way. Do not pull super tight one way or the other.  Pull the same amount of even pressure throughout the wrap and just start to angle your way down to the ankle.  When you get to the ankle take the wrap to make an A (or inverted V) by taking it below and around the fetlock and then back up wrapping above the fetlock.  Then do this one more time, so that there are two wraps to support their fetlock.

Now, start to wrap back up the leg with a similar angle as when you wrapped down.  You’ll wrap past where you started right below the knee. Now secure the velcro.

I recommend using electric tape to secure the velcro further, but do not use any pressure in the application, it’s just a nice little wrap, so that your velcro doesn’t catch and come undone as you’re running barrels. I don’t ever use polo wraps without taping them on.

The way I apply polo wraps is rolling them velcro to velcro. I roll my wraps towards the velcro by hand in a nice tight circle. I think rolling them flat makes them harder to apply. If you haven’t washed them just check them while rolling to remove any dirt clods or debris that may be stuck to them.  Once rolled, you can apply the velcro to secure them. I also keep mine bagged to keep them clean and sorted by color.
